International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend
In 1994 during a wet wintry evening two members, John GM4OOU and
Mike GM4SUC (SK)
of the Ayr ARC of Scotland were talking about creating an event in the summer
where
club members could get out into the sunshine and play radio.
Various themes were discussed but it was finally decided that lighthouses of
Scotland
would be a great idea. In the winter of 1995 and invitation was sent out to all
Scottish
clubs to join in this fun summer event by establishing an amateur radio station
at a
lighthouse the third weekend in August. The event was called Northern Lighthouse
Activity
Weekend. The first year 11 stations participated and made 450 QSO’s.
The following year another theme was used but the next year it returned to
lighthouses.
At this time other countries asked to join in, so the name was changed to the
International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend. The weekend became an annual event
with
slowly growing popularity. In 1999 there were 204 lighthouse stations in 36
countries.
Currently there are 50 countries with 450 lighthouses in the weekend event.
The main reason this event has become so popular is because it is NOT a contest.
Its purpose is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and their need for
preservation
and restoration and to promote amateur radio as well.
Lighthouses are becoming an endangered species with the advent of Global
Positing Systems and automation. Hopefully this event will highlight this
situation and help
prevent further decay of the worldwide lighthouse system.
The basic idea is to set up an Amateur station in or adjacent to a lighthouse.
In this way, the station makes a visible presence to the passing public who may
be
visiting the lighthouse. The Ayr Amateur Radio Club continues to participate and
has
adopted the lighthouse at Turnberry in South Ayrshire
as its event location. This event is dedicated to GM4SUC (SK) memory.
GSBARC has been activating the Fire Island Lighthouse for a number of years now,
so come join the fun at our lighthouse on August 18 and 19, 2012
Foot note:
The ILLW is and always has been held on the third full weekend of August!!!
There is a splinter group that has caused confusing information regarding a
similar titled event.
Their event is a CONTEST and a week long event.
